Thank you for the brilliant presentation, it was a great help and what we took on board will be very useful to us, all in all absolutely first class information. The presentation given on site at Mega Filling Station here in Sheffield took only about one hour and it was without doubt one of the most productive hours we have spent this year or last. It opened our eyes to a number of issues that we had perhaps missed whilst bogged down in the day to day running of the site. I was put in touch with Torex through another Londis store, who had informed me that they could increase my margin by 2%. Now I did not believe him as I have had the Torex system for over 6 years and I know everything about the system and I suspected what he was going to tell me was nothing I did not know already. But was I wrong, they have shown me how to increase my margin by 2.5% in fact, it doesn't sound like a lot but its enough of a saving that can pay for a holiday twice over.

I first listened to the Profit Clinic presentation at an RMI Forecourt road show in Exeter, and heard it again at a regional Londis cluster meeting. Following that we invited Torex to our site to look at our own pricing strategy. The Torex team are clearly passionate about pricing and the style and enthusiasm make you sit up and listen to what they have to say.

We are all retailers, we all know how to manage and market our own businesses, but we were encouraged to go back to basics and question the ideas and long-standing beliefs we have cemented in our minds regarding pricing. We all have ideas of how to pitch the price of different categories and products but the clinic challenges to think and question whether those ideas remain relevant in this current economic climate.

The overall point of the presentation and site visit is to help you make money. But, to do this, Torex is not suggesting you need to make fundamental changes to your business or invest in new technologies, but simply suggesting you need to think about your pricing. This is nothing new, and it all boils down to optimising your pricing to maximise your profitability. It is the age-old balancing act between pricing high enough to boost margin, but low enough to promote volume.

You may think you know your own shop, but you will be surprised. There are many ways in which you may not be pricing at the optimum to maximise profit. Being encouraged to think again about your customers, your local competition and your offer, you think more carefully about your pricing.

You know your own business better than anyone else, but the industry is changing, as well as the expectations of your customers and Torex reminds us to keep in control of our prices and margins.

We are in the middle of a difficult and challenging economic climate. These are testing times and we are all focusing on running our businesses. It is all too easy to be focused on day-to-day activities and forget the basics. It is sometimes necessary to take a step back and think critically about our business and market. It is sometimes necessary to question our overall pricing strategy for the store as well as strategies for each category and individual lines.

We recently changed our prices throughout the store and employed some of the strategies suggested. We had not kept up to date with all the price rises implemented by suppliers and found our margins on key lines had shrunk. It is too early to quantify the impact of the changes we made, but it is safe to say we should have looked into our margins earlier.

You may think you know your own store and you may think your pricing strategy for each department is justified, but invite Torex into your shop and you will be surprised at what they will find and how much additional profit they can make for you.
